THE SELFPORTRAIT OF KA-LAI CHAN

The Selfportrait of Ka-Lai Chan
text by Apostolos Mitsios for Yatzer

Self perception is the key to stability and happiness and it seems that Dutch designer Ka-Lai Chan has been questioning a lot of herself lately. She introduces us to her latest work called “Selfportrait”, a graduation project for the school of arts in Utrecht based on the emotions and suppressed feelings that she has experienced. The aforementioned is reflected in a very direct and still confusing way in this chair, the black pu textile reminds someone of the s/m games of dominance/submission, which can also describe a particular state of mind. On the other hand, the polyether foam irregular surface of the chair gives someone the impression of a strange tumor growing out of ones body. It looks fluffy but dangerous at the same time.
